How to track link clicks in a PDF

Put a short link behind each link in a PDF to count its clicks, test it in several viewers, read the numbers and change where it leads after the file is sent.

A PDF doesn’t report clicks back to you. To count them, point each link in the document at a short link you control. The short link counts the click and sends the reader on, and you can change where it leads after the PDF is sent.

This guide follows a made-up wedding photographer’s six-page price guide. It covers planning, adding and testing the links, reading the counts and changing a link later. Links doesn’t host or edit PDFs. To share a whole PDF through one address, see how to share a PDF with a short link.

Once a PDF is emailed, downloaded or printed, you can’t edit the copies people keep. So the price guide’s “Book a date” button opens a reunified.link short link, which counts the click and then opens the booking form. If the form moves, you change the short link, not the PDF.

UTM tags alone can show PDF visits in your own website’s analytics. A short link also counts clicks for pages you don’t run, such as her form on a booking service.

Give each link its own short link, so the numbers tell them apart:

Page Link text Short-link title Destination
2 See the portfolio Price guide · portfolio Portfolio page, tagged
5 Book a date Price guide · booking Booking form
6 Full price list Price guide · prices Prices page, tagged

The portfolio and prices pages are on her website, so they get UTM tags (UTM guide). Put the tags in the saved destination, because Links doesn’t pass on anything added to a short link.

https://example.com/portfolio?utm_source=price_guide&utm_medium=pdf&utm_campaign=wedding_2026

Name links after where they appear in the PDF, never after people: no link per couple and no names in titles.

Put each short link on text that says where it goes, such as “See the portfolio”, not a vague “here”. If the PDF may be printed, list the short addresses too, as she does on the last page. They work even when typed in capitals.

In Word, select the text, choose Insert, then Link, then Existing File or Web Page, and enter the short link as the Address (Microsoft’s steps). If you type a page’s full address, Word may link it straight to that page, so check the address behind every link.

To add links to a finished PDF, use Adobe’s Acrobat steps: select Edit, More, Link, then Add or edit a link. Drag a rectangle over the button, choose Open a web page, select Next and enter the short link.

Export the PDF and test it in several viewers

Create the PDF with your app’s export or save command: printing to PDF can drop the links. Open the exported file, not the draft, in a web browser, a desktop reader such as Acrobat Reader, and a phone’s PDF viewer. Check that every link opens the right page, then type one printed address by hand.

Acrobat and Acrobat Reader can be set to warn before a PDF opens a website, or to block it (Trust Manager settings). Either is the viewer’s setting, not a broken link. Your test clicks are counted too, so note when you made them.

In the Links app, each link’s Statistics show counted clicks per day over 7, 30 or 90 days, an all-time total, and breakdowns such as country, device and referrer. Clicks from a PDF often arrive with no referring site and show as Direct, so use these short links only in the PDF.

What the counts mean:

  • Clicks from forwarded copies count too.
  • Repeat clicks count each time.
  • Recognized bots and link previews aren’t counted, but a counted click still isn’t a person.
  • Links doesn’t know who opened the file and doesn’t count opens, downloads or pages read.

Links stores no IP addresses and sets no cookies (analytics privacy guide). For what happened next, check your website analytics and the booking service’s own records.

Change a destination after you send the PDF

Three months later, she switches to a new booking form. She opens “Price guide · booking” in the Links app, notes the old address, presses Edit main destination, enters the new form’s address and saves. The short link stays the same, so every copy she sent now opens the new form. If a link has destination rules, check those too (editing guide). Then she tests it from an old copy.

Keep the links working:

  • Creating links is free, each counted click costs 0.05 credits and new accounts start with 100 credits (current pricing). Without credits, links pause and readers see an “unavailable” page.
  • Don’t delete a link while copies still use it: deleting stops it for good.
  • For a new edition, reuse the links to keep one count, or make new ones to compare editions.

Links gives each link in your PDF a click count and a destination you can still change after the file is sent.
